Role:     Operations Specialist (Linux, MySQL)

Term:     Contract - 6 months (with likelihood of renewal)

Location: Belfast

Rate:     Market rate

A leading provider of IT Solutions and Services requires an experienced DBA to work closely with their Belfast development team and Customer to support and enhance the operational environment, (particularly database deployments), for their software solutions.

Duties:

  • Provide MYSQL Database operational expertise, including introducing database clustering and leading the delivery and ongoing support & administration of a highly resilient/highly available/highly performant live deployment architecture 
  • Collaborate with Project Manager(s) throughout the enhancement process e.g. in producing estimates, reporting progress and managing risks/issues 
  • Show initiative and make time available to ensure general technical competencies and specialisations are kept up-to-date in line with industry developments 
  • Assist the team to achieve its maximum velocity by identifying potential improvements & efficiencies in the architectures, technologies & processes being employed

Skills and experience required:

  • Essential Strong background in MySQL Database Administration/Management , (minimum 2 years commercial experience), especially: 1. Defining and delivering high resilience/high availability deployments (e.g. clustering) 2. Proactive monitoring and housekeeping including performance monitoring and tuning 3. Delivering robust and proven back-up and disaster recovery processes 4.  Ensuring recognised industry best-practice is delivered 
  • Essential Demonstrable bias for automation e.g. in relation to backups and deploying database changes, migrations …etc, 
  • Essential Strong attention to detail with excellent problem solving & analytical skills; ability to think laterally and provide innovative solutions 
  • Essential Ability to communicate with customers, colleagues & stakeholders with varying levels of technical knowledge
  • Preferred Experience of Linux Administration (RHEL preferred); ideally including SSH/SSL configuration & patching.

  • Preferred Scripting experience e.g. using Bash, Perl, Python, PHP ..etc preferred

  • Preferred Experience of working in a DevOps/Infrastructure as Code environment using Chef, Puppet …etc 

  • Preferred Experience of NoSQL databases (e.g. Mongo)

  • Preferred Experience of supporting an n-tier environment preferably using a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache MySQL) 

  • Preferred Understanding of Agile design and delivery approaches such as Scrum methodology 

  • Preferred Experience in test-driven development, behaviour-driven development, continuous integration and continuous delivery environments
